I moved to the Van region of eastern Turkey in 2010 to teach photography at Yuzuncu Yil University. Drawn by its mountains, lakes, remote villages, and layered history, I began photographing the region in 2011 under the title Under the Shadow of the Sun, inspired by the ancient Urartian name Tusba—the City of the Sun. For six years, I wandered through isolated mountain villages, documenting lives shaped by seasonal rhythms, animal husbandry, and a close relationship with the land. What I encountered was not simply a way of life preserved from the past, but a different experience of time itself—one that seemed largely untouched by the pace and anxieties of contemporary life. I later returned to the same villages to revisit both the places and my own memories of them. The roads, landscapes, and people remained familiar, yet my way of seeing had changed. Instead of relying solely on natural light and observation, I began introducing artificial light into open landscapes. These interventions do not seek to fabricate reality, but to acknowledge that every photograph is shaped by memory, experience, and the photographer's evolving gaze. Under the Shadow of the Sun Revisited is both a continuation and a reconsideration of the earlier project. By returning to the same places, it explores how time transforms not only landscapes and communities, but also the act of looking itself. The project moves from observation toward interpretation, suggesting that documentary photography can embrace subjectivity without losing its connection to lived reality.
